OK all, why do many Brooklands cars and motorcycles have fish-tail exhausts?  Most of the bikes in the Campbell have, the Napier-Railton has…..

A visitor asked me this today and, I ashamed to say, I didn’t know.

If anyone can tell me, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks,

Because the neighbours complained about the noise !!

The fish tails were supposed to make them quieter . Not sure if that actually worked though !

Go into the ERA shed and look at the exhaust pipes on the motor cycles.  Looking at them sideways-on you’ll see that the end of the silencer is the shape of a fishes tail; flat and triangular.  That’s a fish-tail exhaust.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
